Like a house a child would draw: This nice little milk carton tower from 1955 in Sairaanhuoneenkatu 6, Turku was designed by city architect Abel Sandelin. He and other architects working in the municipal building department were responsible for many of the best houses in Turku in the 1940’s and 1950’s. A nice 1950’s detail is the plaster finish that tries to imitate concrete elements with seams and all. It seems ironic now that so much effort was put into making handmade buildings look like modern factory products, when now we often try to achieve the reverse.
